RENEWAL OF DRIVING LICENCE
From 19 January 2013 there is a single European driving licence and the renewal of the document will be made by issuing the single European model and in accordance with Spanish Law.
Driving licences issued in a Member State of the European Union or in a State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area pursuant to European law are fully valid in Spain, under the terms of issuance in their country of origin, except that minimum age for driving is that required to obtain the equivalent Spanish license. HOLDERS OF AN EUROPEAN DRIVING LICENCE THAT HAS EXPIRED OR IS DUE TO EXPIRE However, those driving licences issued by one of those Member States that have been withdrawn, suspended or restricted in any Member State or in Spain shall not be valid to drive in Spain. To renew the European driving licence, the holder of the document must be subject to medical fitness testing and to be a resident in the Member State in which the renewal is being applied for.
The holder of the European driving licence with indefinite validity period or a validity period exceeding 15 years must renew his/her licence as long as they are legally residing in Spain as from two years of the entry into force of Directive 2006/126/CE, 19 January 2013.
HOLDERS OF AN EUROPEAN DRIVING LICENCE WITH INDEFINITE VALIDITY PERIOD, OR A PERIOD EXCEEDING 15 YEARS FOR GROUP 1 AND A PERIOD EXCEEDING 5 YEARS FOR GROUP 2
For example: 1. The holder of the European driving licence with indefinite validity period or a validity period exceeding 15 years legally residing in Spain as from 19/01/2013 or before that date must renew his/her driving licence on or after 19/01/2015. 2. The holder of the European driving licence with indefinite validity period or a validity period exceeding 15 years legally residing in Spain as from 06/06/2014 must renew his/her driving licence on or after 06/06/2016. This procedure complies with the rules on driving licences (Directive 2006/126/CE and the General Regulations on Drivers approved by Royal Decree 818/2009, 8 of May) as an essential factor in the common transport policy, contributing to increase road traffic safety. Member States should be able to apply the period of validity prescribed by this Directive to a licence without a limited administrative validity issued by another Member State and whose holder has resided on their territory for more than two years. Therefore, starting in 2013 a single European driving licence is in force in the 28 Member States of the European Union; this document is necessary to harmonise more than 110 types of licences which existed a few years ago.
